Anyway back to topic, be aware that the Oda start surrounded next to four potential superpowers (Okay anyone could potentially be one but due to how the game works they generally have favourites) Imagawa (Irony), the Hattori, the Takeda and the Ikko Ikki. My first campaign was with the Oda because of the Ashigary bonuses. Since the Oda get so many useful bonuses to ashigaru units, they're by far the easiest clan for the campaign.

Yari ashigaru in spearwall are extremely strong and when used right, can defeat full samurai armies. Use monks to demoralize enemy armies, use ninja to sabotage them and give you some time to get reinforcements, use metsukes in your wealthiest cities, etcetera.

Upgrade all your farms ASAP and research the farm technologies before you do anything else. Yari ashigaru benefit more from armor upgrades from a weaponsmith than weapon (melee attack) upgrades. You'll be able to defend more fronts and attack more easily. This'll make a big difference in your campaign. With ashigaru armies, you'll have twice the amount of armies for almost the same effectiveness (and, arguably, even more effectiveness when defending). These are so expensive in upkeep that your economy will falter and you'll only be able to field 2-3 full stacks. Many players fall for the trap of creating large samurai armies.
Then move your flanks to the center and finish them off. Let the enemy army hit your spearwall and then hit them on the flanks with your remaining yari ashigaru units and yari cavalry. Use your yari cavalry to move around the flanks and try to kill his general (it's okay to lose 50-75% of your unit if you manage to kill his general).
In battle, use 6-8 of your yari ashigaru to create one big spearwall. What you basically want is to create armies consisting of 1 general, 10 yari ashigaru, 6 bow ashigaru and 3 yari cavalry. The provinces in Kyushu? are also quite small compared to the North-Eastern Date areas so you can quickly conquer Kyushu.
